Karen Strom has supplied two amazing ePub3 sample and demonstration books for EPUB3 WORLD. Illusions of Reality and Sticks and Stones, an animated alphabet ebook. Both books are an inspiring and original use of ePub3 and demonstrate what can be done with digital content at the presentation and interactive levels using a relatively simple set of tools.
Karen Strom has supplied two amazing ePub3 sample and demonstration books for EPUB3 WORLD. Illusions of Reality and Sticks and Stones, an animated alphabet ebook.
Both books are an inspiring and original use of ePub3. They demonstrate some new ideas of what can be done with digital content in the ePub3 package at the presentation and interactive levels.
Due to the inclusion of scripting for the animation, sound and the image content, the ePub3 is available only for the iBook reader on the iPad and for the Chrome browser on your desktop with the Readium extension installed.
Both books load in AZARDI Desktop but with limitations due to the M4V and M4A media and tablet specific Javascript.
Illusions of Reality
This design portfolio is a unique and original use of ePub3. It uses rich media and javascript to present a set of stunning images with a slightly surreal touch.
The rectangular magnifying cursor is an original touch and adds an extra dimension to the book.
This book uses ePub3 landscape presentation and contains M4V video.

Sticks and Stones
Sticks and Stones is both entertaining and a learning experience.

This is a localized e-book learning strategy that is impossible to do as effectively in print. Where do you find a book designed to teach the principles of binary letters from a localized environment? This book is inspirational in the way it uses common objects to represent abstract concepts.
It uses a standard two page spread. It contains an ePub2 Guide to define the cover so this opens correctly in the center in Readium. Strictly speaking this is almost an ePub3/2 without an NCX.
The Introduction page is worth a look. Karen has used javascript scrolling to convert a fixed layout frame into a scrolling page. It is nice to see this technique used to break the layout limitations of locked page fixed layout.
